CAUSES OF CROUP

 1 croup

4 retropharyngeal abscess

                                              what is croup ?

Croup is a common upper respiratory infection usually caused by viruses and also caused by upper airway obstruction also it occurs in the children <2 years old

                                      Etiology

 There are several viruses that can cause croup many cases  comes from parainfluenza

 viruses ( the common cold) other viruses that may cause croup include adenovirus

 another group of common cold viruses) respiratory syncytial virus(RSV) the most common germ 

Effecting young children and measles croup may also be caused by Allergies exposure to inhaled  to 

 inhaled irritants or bacterial infection but these are rare

 

          SIGN AND SYMPTOMS    

  sign and symptoms it is divided by two types that are include these                                                               
mild croup or sever croup
     Mild croup is characterized fever
 a hoarse voice barking or hacking cough 
 strider it is heard only when the child is agitated

   sever croup is characterized 
Strider even when the child is a rest Rapid breathing and lower chest in drawing 
Cyanosis or oxygen saturation 

COMPLICATIONS OF CROUP

Respiratory failure

Pneumonia

Airway obstruction

Upper airway infection

INVESTIGATIONS

There is no specific test or simple to send when you suspected the croup but you send these Culture of the syncytial virus which is common cause croup

Chest x ray and CBC specific WBC to rule out any infection

TREATMENT

 dexamethasone 0.3 or 0.6 mg/kg daily to decreased inflammation 

 adrenaline 2 mg to bronchial dilation

 and you make supportive management
