Definition:retropharyngeal abscess is a collection of puss in the back of the throat  and it is a serous in infection in the neck Retropharyngeal abscess is rare . It typically occurs in children Under age eight Although it can also effect old children and adults  

ETIOLOGY
  it causes different agent but the common causes include these
◆ streptococcus
◆staphylococcus aureus 
◆medical Procedure or dental work 
◆trauma to the erea 

         Sign and Symptoms  

 ◆difficult breathing 
◆Pain  full  when  swallowing 
◆fever 
  ◆Cough
◆sever sore throat 
◆neck  stiffness or swelling
◆Drooling
◆Muffled voice
◆Torticollitis      

Complications
 
pneumonia  
blood clots in in jugular vein
inflammation or infection in the chest cavity outside the lung 
osteomyelitis bone infection     

Investigations
  
◆chest x ray
◆CT SCAN
◆CBC
◆BLOOD CULTURE  

Treatment

◆ ceftriaxone 50mg/kg iv daily 7 0r 10 days
◆surgical drainage if antibiotic fails to treated
